Crater Lake is a secluded spot in the heart of Oregon’s Cascade Mountains. Can you camp anywhere in Crater Lake?
In the summer, you can camp at the park’s five designated backcountry campsites—Bybee Creek, Dutton Creek, Grouse Hill, Lightning Springs, and Red Cone Springs—with a permit. Dispersed camping is also allowed with a permit. In winter, you can camp along the rim with a permit.
Thousand Springs is a great place to enjoy winter recreation. The Sno-Park is a great place to park your car and camp for free in the summer. The southwest corner of the park is a great place to enjoy the views of Crater Lake.

Crater Lake Campgrounds – Mazama and Lost Creek are two beautiful campgrounds located near Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. Mazama Campground offers tent sites for $21 per night, RV sites with no hook-ups for $31 per night, RV sites with electric hook-ups for $36 per night, and RV sites with full hook-ups for $42 per night. Lost Creek Campground offers walk-in campsites for $5 per night and RV sites for $10 per night.
How do I reserve a campsite at Crater Lake?
The reservation/cancellation line for Crater Lake Hospitality (Aramark), which manages Mazama Campground is 866-292-6720. The easiest way to locate the campground is via Hwy 62 through either the West or South Entrances which meet and turn towards Crater Lake and the Annie Spring Entrance Station.
A backcountry camping permit is required year-round for all overnight trips in the park. Permits are not required for day hiking; however, day hikers must observe all backcountry regulations. Permits are issued free of charge.
Can you see Crater Lake for free?
All visitors to Crater Lake National Park must pay an entrance fee. Be sure to have your physical pass or digital pass ready to show upon entry; photos of passes will not be accepted.
If you’re looking to camp at Crater Lake, there are several options for first-come, first-serve camping. Both the Mazama Campground and the Lost Creek Campground offer sites on a first-come, first-serve basis. In June, all of the sites at Mazama Campground are first-come, first-serve, while 25% of the sites are first-come, first-serve for the rest of the season. Lost Creek Campground is always first-come, first-serve.

If you’re looking for lodging options at Crater Lake National Park, you’ve got two choices: Crater Lake Lodge and The Cabins at Mazama Village. Crater Lake Lodge is the more upscale option, offering rooms with en-suite bathrooms, a restaurant and bar, and a gift shop. The Cabins at Mazama Village are more rustic, but offer a kitchenette in each unit and access to coin-operated laundry facilities. Both options offer stunning views of Crater Lake.
When should you not go to Crater Lake?
If you’re looking to hike in the park, it’s best to wait until later in the season when the snow has melted and the trails are more clear. In the meantime, you can check out the views from the many overlooks!
Crater Lake is one of the snowiest places in America, receiving an average of 43 feet of snow per year. This means that there are only a few months when people can swim in the lake, typically from June through September. Visitors to the region should be prepared for cold weather and plan accordingly.
Are there bears in Crater Lake
There are conflicting opinions concerning the early abundance of black bears in the region, with some believing that they were common in the park since its establishment in 1902, and others believing that they only became common in the last 50 years when they started to concentrate at garbage dumps. However, there is no denying that black bears have become a nuisance in the park in recent years, and something needs to be done to control their population.
The deep blue color of Crater Lake is due to the fact that it is incredibly deep! Visitors can swim at designated areas, but beware — the water is usually very cold! Still, the water is absolutely beautiful and definitely worth a visit!
How many days should you spend at Crater Lake?
Crater Lake is one of the most beautiful places on earth, and ideally you should spend at least one day and one night there to fully appreciate it. Unfortunately, getting to Crater Lake can be a bit of a hassle, as it is quite far away and the lines to get into the actual park can be quite long. However, once you finally do make it to Crater Lake, it is definitely worth it and you won’t want to leave. So make sure to plan accordingly and give yourself enough time to really enjoy this amazing place.
Aramark is the concessionaire for the electrical hookups at this campground. A few sites have electrical hookups available. The amenities at this campground include water hydrants throughout the campground, fire rings, picnic tables, public restrooms, public showers, laundry facilities, a camper store, a gas station (including propane), and a dump station.
