Location and History
Lake Superior State University (LSSU) is a public university located in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Founded in 1946 as Michigan College of Mining and Technology, LSSU educates over 3,000 students seeking undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of disciplines.
The University was formed to help build the economy of the region. It was accredited already in the 1960s. In 1970, it was renamed as Lake Superior State College and it achieved university status in June 1987. The University has since gained professional accreditations from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the American Networks of Colleges and Schools, and the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs.
Campus
LSSU is in a peaceful, residential and park-like environment which includes several large lakes and forests, on campus. One of the beautiful landmarks is a large statue called the “Laker Man”. It’s a symbol for the college’s spirit and serves as a reminder of the strength of its natural resources.
The campus includes several notable buildings, such as the Walker Cisler Student Center, Wallace Hall, River Valley Apartments, and the College of Business. LSSU also has residence halls and apartment style housing options for its students.

Main Features
The University offers a wide range of activities for students to take part in, ranging from student organizations and clubs to sports teams and intramural activities. It is also home to the Lake Superior State Athletics, with varsity teams in Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Soccer and Volleyball.
The University also hosts a range of large and small events throughout the year, ranging from guest lectures to summer camps. One such event is the Laker Spirit Fest which is held annually to celebrate the University’s commitment to the community and its students.
Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission at LSSU, an applicant should demonstrate the appropriate academic record and admissions requirements. Prospective students are encouraged to take the ACT/SAT, submit a portfolio of two written essays and two letters of recommendation, and submit transcripts and high school diplomas.
In addition, the University offers an alternative admissions option for students who do not meet the standard admission requirements. This requirements include submitting a portfolio of personal essays and short-answer questions and an alternative form of assessment such as GED certificate, letters of recommendation, etc.

Lake Superior State University has consistently been ranked among the top universities in Michigan and is ranked in the top 25 best small colleges in the Midwest. It is also ranked as one of the most affordable universities in the United States by The Princeton Review.
