He wanted to create an alien monster, the Moorwen, that would be inspired by the creatures described in the poem. McCain did extensive research into Beowulf and other Old English texts to make sure that the Moorwen was a believable and fearsome creature.
A dead elk in the river caused the water to be tainted. Although the sickness has run its course, many died. Several were very ill but much better now, including Tom Christie (Mark Lewis Jones). A weak body and raggedy hair doesn’t give Claire pause as she makes her way down to the fisher-folk campsite.
What creature is the waterhorse in Outlander
The water horse is a creature from Celtic and Scandinavian mythology. It is typically portrayed as a horse-like creature with the body of a serpent or fish. The water horse is said to lure people to their deaths, either by drowning them or by eating them.

Many people believe that the Loch Ness Monster is a real creature, and there have been many sightings of it over the years. Claire and Frank hire a local guide to take them out on the loch early on in the first book, and in Chapter 19 Claire sees ‘the Loch Ness monster’. In a later book she tells her daughter’s boyfriend that she thinks she saw a plesiosaur, a long necked dinosaur.

Why did Claire’s necklace turn black?
Master Raymond is a skilled poisoner, and he has used his skills to create a deadly poison. He has also added a little bit of sleight of hand to the poison, so that when Claire drinks it, her necklace turns black. This shows that Master Raymond is a cunning and dangerous man, and that anyone who crosses him should be very careful.
The Duke was a suspected Jacobite, and he gifted a bauble to Dougal. This bauble triggers Claire’s future memory. Claire remembers that the Duke was also a suspected Jacobite.
