When Canadians and Americans talk about the Great Lakes, the majority of them usually focus on the five lake system along the border of the two countries. While the Five Great Lakes remain the most famous, there is a sixth lake that is often overlooked – Superior. This lake is the largest of the Great Lakes by surface area, and is the largest freshwater lake by surface area in the world – larger than the Mediterranean Sea. With an area of 31,700 square miles, Lake Superior is an important part of the landscape of both the US and Canada.
