The Dragonfly in Amber episode was amazing! The interweaving of the two timelines was well done and the focus on the 20th century was great. It was interesting to see the grown-up versions of Claire and Jamie’s daughter Brianna and Reverend Wakefield’s adopted son Roger. Both actors did a great job with their respective roles. Overall, this was a great episode and I’m looking forward to see what the rest of the season has in store.
Although Sassenach is technically a Gaelic word for an English person, it’s not exactly a compliment when Jamie uses it to refer to Claire. In fact, it’s actually a pretty scathing insult.
Gabaldon explains that the word is derived from the Old English word for Saxon (a Germanic tribe who invaded and settled in England during the 5th and 6th centuries). The Saxons were considered to be brutish and barbaric by the Scots, so when Jamie calls Claire a Sassenach, he’s basically calling her an ignorant and uncivilized woman. Ouch.

Did Jamie sleep with Malva
Claire and Jamie’s relationship with Malva is forever changed after she is caught sleeping with him. Even though Jamie denies it, the damage to their reputations is done. Malva is later found murdered in the garden, which further strengthens the bond between the Frasers.
It’s interesting to learn that Frank knew Jamie survived Culloden but didn’t tell Claire. I wonder what his reasoning was for keeping that information to himself. I’m also glad to hear that Roger told Brianna about Frank. It’s important that she knows about her father and his history.
