Background
Lake Superior State University (LSSU) is an independent public university located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is located in Sault Ste. Marie, a small town located on the banks of the St. Mary’s River between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Established in 1946, it is Michigan’s smallest public university with an enrollment of just over 2,500 students. The school prides itself on offering a well-rounded educational experience with its liberal arts, science, engineering and sport management programs. Its main goal is to prepare students to become competent, creative, caring and responsible citizens.
Divisions
Lake Superior State University is organized into four divisions: the College of Arts and Sciences; the School of Business; the School of Education and Human Services; and the School of Technology and Applied Sciences.
The College of Arts and Sciences consists of 23 departments offering degrees ranging from the associate’s level all the way up to the doctorate. All courses are taught by knowledgeable and accomplished faculty members. The College is divided into four main areas of study: Humanities and Languages, Mathematics and Computer Science, Natural Sciences, and Social and Behavioural Sciences.
The School of Business provides degree programs in disciplines such as marketing, accounting, business administration and economics. The school has a unique approach to develop its students’ skills in accountancy and business. Students complete internships and experiential learning to further enhance their skills.
The School of Education and Human Services is comprised of three departments of education: the Center for Instructional Excellence and Innovation, the Department of Education and the Department of Human Services. These departments offer degrees and certificates in the fields of special education, educational leadership, counselor education, sports management, sports psychology and human services.
The School of Technology and Applied Science offers degrees in computer science, engineering, industrial technology and public safety. It also provides courses in medical coding, nursing and engineering technology. The school provides a comprehensive array of courses and programs to meet the needs of its diverse student body.
Programs
Lake Superior State University provides students with a wide variety of degree and certificate programs. There are over 90 bachelor’s degrees, 55 master’s degrees, four doctor of education, two doctor of science and four doctoral programs. These programs are offered in the four divisional areas – Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Human Services and Technology and Applied Sciences.
Students can choose from a wide range of liberal arts and sciences classes, including English, math and science, as well as specialized fields such as engineering and sport management. Additionally, the University provides students with a range of certificate and professional programs, as well many addition honors courses.
Campus Life
Lake Superior State University has been recognized for its dynamic and vibrant campus life and for its commitment to providing students with the best educational experience possible. Campus life at Lake Superior State University revolves around academics, social activities and sports. There are a variety of clubs, intramural sports, student organizations, and campus events.
The University offers a variety of housing options for students. The on-campus residence hall is a traditional dormitory, while the off-campus apartments offer a more independent approach to living.
Students who live on campus can enjoy the close proximity to the many campus amenities, including the library, a computer lab, a gym and recreation complex, a cafeteria, and two student centers. Off-campus students can take advantage of the university’s shuttle service, which runs to and from all of the residence halls.
Sports
Lake Superior State University has a vibrant athletic department, offering 22 intercollegiate sports. The university is also a member of NCAA Division II, giving students the opportunity to compete at the highest level of college athletics.
LSSU also offers many club and intramural sports, such as ice hockey, basketball, flag football, softball, and rugby. The athletic department strives to create an atmosphere of fun and competition for all students, regardless of their athletic ability.
Students can take advantage of the athletic facilities located around campus, including the Dow Event Center, the Norris Center and a state-of-the-art performance center.
Accreditation
Lake Superior State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The Higher Learning Commission is responsible for reviewing the curriculum and educational standards of institutions of higher learning throughout the U.S.
In addition to its academic accreditation, the University also holds professional accreditation for its many specialized fields. This includes accreditation from the Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the National Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (NCATE).
