Do you have to pay to get into Crater Lake?
Private vehicles are allowed in the park for $30 in the summer and $20 in the winter. This admits one private, non-commercial vehicle (15-passenger capacity or less) and all occupants. The pass is good for 7 days. Motorcycles are allowed in the park for $25 in the summer and $15 in the winter.
The North Entrance to Crater Lake National Park is open year-round, from Interstate 5 just south of Eugene. Take Highway 58 to Highway 97. If the North Entrance is open, turn west on Highway 138 to the park’s North Entrance.
How much does it cost to go to the crater
As of May 13, 2018, the cost of a Crater Lake National Park specific annual pass per vehicle is $25. This pass allows access to the park for one vehicle for one year from the date of purchase. On January 1, 2020, the cost of the pass will increase to $30.
A backcountry camping permit is required year-round for all overnight trips in the park. Permits are not required for day hiking; however, day hikers must observe all backcountry regulations. Permits are issued free of charge.
What is the best entrance to Crater Lake?
There are three ways into Crater Lake National Park, the most convenient being from the west and south on Ore 62, which runs through the southwest corner of the park. To get to the park’s west entrance, drive northeast from Medford 75 miles on Ore.
All vehicles must be left at Park Headquarters during winter months and a valid park entrance pass and backcountry camping parking permit must be displayed on your dashboard. During summer months, vehicles may be left at designated trailhead parking areas or nearby pullouts.
Can you see Crater Lake without entering the park?
The Crater Lake scenic Rim Drive is a great way to see the lake without having to hike. There are 30 overlooks with parking areas along the west and east side of the lake where you can view the lake from different angles. The best way to see Crater Lake is to spend a morning or afternoon by taking a leisurely drive along the scenic Rim Drive stopping at viewpoints that overlook the lake.
The park is about a 3-hour drive southeast of Eugene. You can take Interstate 5 South to Highway 58 to Highway 97 South to Highway 138 West to reach the north entrance of the park. If that entrance is closed, you can drive to either the west or south entrance.
Can you see Crater Lake without hiking
Crater Lake is a beautiful place to visit in the summertime. You can drive around the lake on the Rim Drive, a 33-mile loop with more than 30 lookout points. Trolley tours are usually available from Rim Village and can be booked in advance through Crater Lake Trolley.
The meteor crater used to be free to view, but there have been substantial upgrades made to the site. If you don’t pay the admission fee, you won’t be able to see the crater.
Is Craters of the Moon worth it?
Craters of the Moon is definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in the area! The landscape is unlike anything else you’ll see and it’s fascinating to explore Indian Tunnel. We were only able to spend a couple of hours there, but it was well worth the detour!
The giant dent in the ground is definitely worth the $32 admission fee for Jason and myself. The tour only lasts an hour but the experience is unforgettable. There are videos and tours available but nothing beats being there in person.
How much are Crater Lake plates
The plate fee is a one-time fee for the initial pair of license plates. The plate replacement fee is an annual fee for each replacement license plate. The total fee for both the plate fee and the plate replacement fee is $6450.
The use of firearms, bicycles, and motorized vehicles is not permitted in the backcountry. Pets are permitted on leash in developed areas only. Pets often threaten small wildlife. Even well-behaved domestic pets leave scents that disturb the local wildlife.
Are both entrances to Crater Lake open?

If you want to avoid the crowds at Crater Lake National Park, arrive before 9 am. The annual average snowfall in the park is 43 feet, and the elevation of the lake’s rim is 7000 to 8000 feet. Snow clouds can sometimes hide the lake from view for days at a time.
