Crater Lake is a great place to visit in the summer months of July, August, and September. The roads, trails, and facilities are usually fully open during these months and the weather is ideal for exploring the park. May and June are months of transition in the park, as winter slowly gives way to summer.
The views from and around the lodge are breathtaking and worth the visit alone. There are trails on both sides of the lodge, making it easy to explore the lake and see it from different perspectives. We paid extra for a lakeview room and felt like it was 100% worth the cost.

If you’re looking to visit Crater Lake, you’ll find that Medford, Eugene, and Bend are all much closer than Portland. Medford is only about an hour’s drive away, while Eugene and Bend are both closer to the southern border of Oregon. Keep this in mind when planning your trip!
The electrical hookups are available at a few sites in this campground. The amenities include water hydrants throughout the campground, fire rings, picnic tables, public restrooms, public showers, laundry facilities, a camper store, a gas station (including propane), and a dump station. Are there first come first serve campgrounds near Crater Lake
Crater Lake has several great options for camping on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Mazama Campground is open for first-come, first-serve camping for the month of June, and 25% of the sites are open on a first-come, first-serve basis for the rest of the season. The Lost Creek Campground is always open on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Backcountry camping permits are required year-round for all overnight trips in the park. Permits are not required for day hiking; however, day hikers must observe all backcountry regulations. Permits are issued free of charge.
Can you drive an RV around Crater Lake?
The park is very drivable for any vehicle in the summer and Mazama Campground has several sites for RVs. The Rim Drive and North Entrance are apt to close during the winter months, and the Rim Drive requires slower driving speeds for larger RVs and travel trailers.
