The island was home to a large number of families who made their living by fishing and farming. However, the island was eventually destroyed by a volcanic eruption, and the remaining residents were forced to flee. The shipwrecks are all that remain of this lost community.

Can you go on Wizard Island?
Wizard Island is a great place to explore whether you take the boat cruise or the shuttle ride. There is a 22-mile round-trip trail that drops approximately 700 ft. that takes you straight to the island.
A tunnel through dead aquatic moss at the bottom of Crater Lake would be an interesting sight to see. The dead moss layers accumulate over thousands of years, sometimes reaching 40 yards thick. This would be a great place to explore and learn more about the history of the lake.

The Phantom Ship is actually a resistant remnant of an ancient volcanic cone that was engulfed in the growing Mazama volcano. This vent shared the underground changer that fed Mount Mazama and was part of its early mountain building phase. Why is there no fish in Crater Lake?

The long history of volcanism at Mount Mazama is an indication that the volcano is still active and will likely erupt in the future. Future eruptions will likely occur within the caldera, and may even occur beneath the surface of the water. The largest explosions could produce pyroclastic surges, hot, rapidly moving clouds of gas and ash, which could move out a few miles from vents along the margin of the lake. Eruptions in deeper water are less likely to be explosive or affect areas around the rim.

The park has more than 90 miles of hiking trails, but in May and June they are typically covered by deep snow. When snow-covered, most trails are either too difficult to follow, or too dangerous. Therefore, during these months, it is best to hike on trails that are cleared of snow.
The park’s water claim for the lake is for the preservation and protection of all natural habitats and the conservation of scenery. It is not for human consumption. Consuming Crater Lake water would conflict with the park’s mission to preserve the lake.
