Here at Crater Lake, we love all furry friends! However, we do have a few guidelines we ask all visitors to follow when bringing along their four-legged companions. All dogs must be on a leash at all times and are not allowed on any of the trails. We also recommend bringing along plenty of water for your pup to stay hydrated in the summer heat.

What is not allowed at Crater Lake
The use of firearms, bicycles, and motorized vehicles is not permitted in the backcountry in order to protect the local wildlife. Pets are permitted on leash in developed areas only. Pets often threaten small wildlife and even well-behaved domestic pets leave scents that disturb the local wildlife.
The park has more than 90 miles of hiking trails, but in May and June they are typically covered by deep snow. When snow-covered, most trails are either too difficult to follow, or too dangerous.
Can I bring my dog to Crater of Diamonds?
Yes, you are welcome to bring your pet to the park! Just be sure to keep them under physical control at all times, and avoid the gift shop area of the visitor center, the park restaurant, the water park, and the bathhouses.
We’re sorry, but no dogs or other pets are allowed on site (including in the car park) with the exception of Assistance Dogs. If you have an Assistance Dog, we’re happy to provide water upon request. Thank you for understanding.

If you want to take a swim in Crater Lake, Cleetwood Cove Trail is the only place to do it! The trail usually opens late June, so plan your trip accordingly. Once you’re down at the lake shore, be mindful of your surroundings and only swim in designated areas – it’s the best way to stay safe and legal.
It’s important to be aware that there are black bears at Crater Lake, and to take precautions to avoid coming into contact with them. The bears are generally afraid of humans, but will defend themselves if they feel threatened. If you see a bear, make noise and try to scare it off. And, of course, never approach a bear or try to feed it.

Getting to the park can be a bit of a hassle, but once you’re there you won’t want to leave. There’s so much to see and do, and the views are incredible. El Malpais National Monument is a beautiful place to take a hike with your pet. Unfortunately, certain areas within the monument are closed to all pets at all times. This includes all caves, lava tubes, lava trenches, archeological and historical sites, government buildings, and government vehicles. We understand that you may want to bring your furry friend along for the adventure, but please be respectful of the rules and refrain from entering these areas with your pet.
Pets are allowed in the monument, but they are not allowed in public buildings or on many of the hiking trails, on the river, or in the backcountry.
