While the Five Great Lakes remain the most famous, there is a sixth lake that is often overlooked &ndash; Superior. This lake is the largest of the Great Lakes by surface area, and is the largest freshwater lake by surface area in the world &ndash; larger than the Mediterranean Sea. With an area of 31,700 square miles, Lake Superior is an important part of the landscape of both the US and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The lake is located on the border between the US and Canada with the bulk of it in the US. Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota appear on the US side of the lake, while Ontario and a sliver of Manitoba protrudes from the Canadian side.
