In any conversation about The Great Lakes, Lake Michigan stands out as one of the largest freshwater bodies of water on Earth. At a whopping 5,890 square miles—not including the ten thousand islands that dot its shore—it is the only one of the five Great Lakes entirely within the United States, and the fifth largest of the world’s freshwater lakes

But how many hours is Lake Michigan from you? The answer isn’t as straightforward as it may seem, as it will depend on where you live. Take Chicago for example, the city closest to the lake. It’s roughly a two-hour drive from downtown Chicago to the shore of Lake Michigan, but the exact time will of course depend on the traffic conditions of the day. If you’re coming from the north of Illinois, the drive could take up to 4 hours.

In fact, the lake is so massive that no matter where you live in the US, you’re never more than six hours away from its shore. Even if you live in the opposite corner of the country, such as in Los Angeles, it’s still just over a five-hour flight. From the East Coast, the flight time drops to about four hours.

While Lake Michigan is a very popular destination for Eastern and Midwesterners in the United States, it doesn’t get as much attention from their Western counterparts. For that reason, many people don’t realize how close they actually are to it, and may not even consider it as an option for a weekend getaway.
