Since the mid 19th century, swimming in Lake Michigan has been a popular activity for locals, tourists, and even athletes. As swimming in the lake was ideal for a variety of activities, people of all ages and experience levels enjoyed the waters. The lake offers a variety of benefits for swimmers, including vast areas for practices, ocean-like currents and waves, and the majestic Chicago skyline as a backdrop. Additionally, the lake is rich in history and provides visitors with the opportunity to experience a piece of the past in the present. During the early 1900s eventually municipal baths were set up and these provided swimmers with a safe environment to enjoy the lake. <\/p>\n

As the popularity of the lake increased, various organizations and groups began to take advantage of it. The Amateur Swimming Association held annual events in the lake, and soon a variety of swim clubs and teams were formed to promote lake swimming. With training and instruction available, many of these organizations were designed to help beginners get comfortable and safe in the lake waters. Organizations like the Chicago Swim Club continue to assist and educate individuals on proper swimming techniques and safety precautions when in the lake. <\/p>\n
