Unfortunately, due to heavy snowfall and road closures, the north road to Crater Lake is not currently open. If you’re coming from the north, take Interstate 5 to Roseburg, then take Oregon 138 east to the park’s north entrance. If you’re coming from the south, take I-5 north to Medford, then take Oregon 62 north and east to the park’s west entrance (which is open year round).<\/p>\n

The best time to visit Crater Lake National Park is during the summer months. From the west, take Highway 62 to the park’s West Entrance. From the south, take Highway 97 to Highway 62 and the park’s South Entrance. The park is open year-round, but some roads and facilities may be closed during the winter.<\/p>\n

Crater Lake is best experienced by car. You can circumnavigate the lake in an hour along the 33-mile Rim Drive, the highest paved road in Oregon. The full loop usually is open from late June to mid-October, depending on snowmelt.<\/p>\n

Crater Lake is one of the snowiest inhabited places in the USA. Each winter, deep snow forces us to close the park’s Rim Drive and North Entrance Road to automobiles. Seasonal road closures are common in this area, so be sure to check the park’s website before planning your visit.<\/p>\n

Rim Drive is the best way to see Crater Lake from every angle! The 33-mile road loops around the caldera and has 8 main viewpoints and 15 turnout vista points, each offering more stunning views than the last. Take your time driving the road, and expect some traffic.<\/p>\n

The Puʻupuaʻi Overlook and parking area are closed to protect the nēnē, a Hawaiian goose. The Devastation Trail is partially open from the Devastation parking area, and Old Crater Rim Drive remains open.<\/p>\n

Crater Lake is an absolutely beautiful place and the only way to see it is to drive the 33 mile Rim Road. I would recommend starting early in the morning and driving clockwise so that you can see all the amazing views. There are plenty of lookout points and overlooks that will allow you to see the lake with very little effort.<\/p>\n

The Crater Lake Trolley Tours will be ending on Friday, September 30th, 2022. This is due to the trolley tours typically beginning in July and running through mid-September. If you wish to go on one of these trolley tours, make sure to do so before the date!<\/p>\n

Can you drive all the way around Crater Lake <\/h3>\n

Please be advised that it will take a minimum of two hours to circumnavigate the lake by car or motorcycle. This time may be longer depending on the size of your vehicle and if you are towing anything. Additionally, traffic goes in both directions on Rim Drive and it is often shared with bicyclists.<\/p>\n

If you’re looking to hike in the park, it’s best to wait until later in the summer when the snow has melted and the trails are more accessible. In the meantime, you can enjoy the park’s other features, such as its scenic views and wildlife.
