With over 50 million people living in its jurisdiction, Lake Michigan is one of the world’s largest freshwater lakes. Its eastern and southern shores touch the states of Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois, while its northwestern shore lies in the state of Wisconsin. Consequently, many of the largest cities in the Midwestern United States are located on the lake’s shores. These include Chicago, Illinois; Gary, Indiana; Green Bay, Wisconsin; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n

Lake Michigan is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. It is the second-largest of the Great Lakes by volume and the third-largest by surface area, after Lake Superior and Lake Huron. It is shared, from west to east, by the US states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. The word “Michigan” originally referred to the lake itself, and is believed to come from the Ojibwa word mishigami meaning “great water”.<\/p>\n
