Lake Michigan is the third largest of the Great Lakes and the only one located entirely within the United States. It is the fifth largest lake in the world. Lake Michigan has a surface area of 22,300 square miles, making it the largest freshwater lake entirely within one country by surface area. It is 307 miles long, 118 miles wide, and 1,640 feet deep on average.<\/p>\n

The average depth of Lake Michigan is 279 feet (85 meters). The deepest point in the lake is 925 feet (282 meters), which is located in the Chippewa Basin in the northwestern part of the lake.<\/p>\n

Where is the deepest spot in Lake Michigan? <\/h2>\n

The South Chippewa Basin is the deepest part of Lake Michigan, reaching depths of over 275 meters. This area is located near the southern end of the lake, where a large portion of the floor extends below sea level.<\/p>\n

There are almost 1,500 (some say 3,000) shipwrecks believed to be at the bottom of Lake Michigan (most of which are small vessels) Only a few hundred of these have been identified. <\/p>\n
