ALTHOUGH LAKE MICHIGAN is one of the five Great Lakes of North America, it is the only one that is entirely within the United States. The other four Great Lakes – Superior, Huron, Erie and Ontario – are shared with Canada. Lake Michigan is the second largest of the Great Lakes by volume and the third largest by surface area, after Lake Superior and Lake Huron (which are actually a single lake with two names). Like the other Great Lakes, Lake Michigan is notoriously cold and its waters are deep. It is about 94 miles long from north to south and about 58 miles wide from east to west.<\/p>\n

It’s unclear exactly why there are so many dead fish in Lake Michigan, but some possible explanations include pollution, changes in water temperature, or a lack of oxygen in the water.<\/p>\n

Because of Lake Michigan’s excellent water clarity, it has been observed growing underwater at depths of more than 30 feet.
