As the story goes, $100,000 in gold coins was lost in Lake Michigan when the steamship Lady Elgin sank in a storm in 1860. In 2011, a group of treasure hunters claimed to have found $1 million in gold coins and artifacts from the shipwreck. While the finds have not been officially confirmed, the hunters say they have photos and video to prove it.<\/p>\n

The short answer is no, they have not found any civil war gold in lake michigan.<\/p>\n

There are many stories about the lost Confederate gold, but this is one of the most interesting. According to legend, Union soldiers tracked down Confederate president Jefferson Davis in 1865 and confiscated his gold. The stolen loot was smuggled north some years later but ended up in Lake Michigan, where Dykstra believes it still remains. It’s an intriguing story, and one that has never been proven (or disproven).<\/p>\n
