How far wide is Lake Michigan?

Lake Michigan is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. It is the second-largest of the Great Lakes by volume and the third-largest by surface area, after Lake Superior and Lake Huron (and is slightly smaller than the U.S. state of West Virginia). It is shared, from west to east, by the U.S. states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. The word “Michigan” originally referred to the lake itself, and is believed to come from the Ojibwe word mishigami meaning “great water”.

Lake Michigan is the only one of the Great Lakes wholly within the borders of the United States; the others are shared with Canada. It lies in the north-central United States, in the Midwest. Its surface area is 22,404 square miles (58,016 km2), which is about one-fifth the size of the U.S. state of California. It is the country’s largest freshwater lake by surface area and the fourth-largest freshwater lake by volume.
