Sure! Crater Lake is about a 5 hour drive from where I live. It’s a beautiful drive too, especially in the fall. The leaves start to change color and the scenery is just breathtaking. Plus, there’s nothing quite like watching the sun set over Crater Lake.<\/p>\n

Although there are no strict regulations in place, it is generally not advised to drive down to Crater Lake. The crater is quite steep and the roads are often icy, making it a dangerous and potentially deadly journey.<\/p>\n

The Cleetwood Cove Trail is the only way to reach the bottom of the lake and access boat tours. The trail is a moderate to strenuous hike that is open from June to October. The trailhead is located at the north end of the lake.<\/p>\n

We were absolutely mesmerized by the beauty of Crater Lake and would highly recommend taking the trip to see it! It’s also very convenient to drive around the entire rim and stop at all of the lookout points in just a few hours. We did hike down towards the water but quickly realized that the best views are actually from up top.<\/p>\n

Can you see Crater Lake without paying? <\/h2>\n

Please be aware that all visitors to Crater Lake National Park are required to pay an entrance fee. Be sure to have your physical pass or digital pass ready to show upon entry – photos of physical passes will not be accepted. Enjoy your time at the park!<\/p>\n

In the winter, all overnight vehicles must be left at Park Headquarters, which is located three miles below the rim. In the summer, vehicles may be left at designated trailhead parking areas or nearby pullouts. A valid park entrance pass and backcountry camping parking permit must be displayed on your dashboard.<\/p>\n

The best way to explore Crater Lake is by driving the Rim Drive. This 33-mile loop is one of the most scenic byways in America and will take you about one hour to drive. However, you should budget a few hours to enjoy all the incredible photo ops along the way.<\/p>\n

How long is the hike to the bottom of Crater Lake <\/h3>\n

The Cleetwood Cove trail offers the only lake shore access in Crater Lake National Park and is a great way to see the lake and get close to the water. The trail is steep in places and can take 15 to 25 hours to complete, but it is well worth the effort. The trailhead is located at the Cleetwood Cove boat dock and the trailhead is well marked.<\/p>\n

If you want to enter the national park with a private vehicle, it will cost you $30 in the summer and $20 in the winter. This fee covers one private, non-commercial vehicle (15-passenger capacity or less) and all occupants. The pass is valid for 7 days. If you’re entering on a motorcycle, the fee is $25 in the summer and $15 in the winter.
