The location of what is now called Crater Lake in Oregon was originally thought to be the site of a massive volcanic eruption. In 1853, two men, Peter Skene Ogden and John Wesley Hillman, were exploring the area and found evidence of a large meteorite impact. The two men reported their findings, but it wasn’t until 1902 that an official investigation was conducted. In that year, geologist Joseph Diller was sent to study the area and he confirmed the impact theory.<\/p>\n
