At just under six miles wide and nearly two miles deep, Oregon’s Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States. It is also one of the most beautiful, with its deep blue waters and surrounding cliffs. The lake was formed about 7,700 years ago when the 12,000-foot Mount Mazama erupted and then collapsed, creating a huge crater. Over time, rain and snowmelt filled the crater with water. Today, there is no river leading in or out of the lake—the water is replenished only by precipitation.<\/p>\n

The caldera of Crater Lake extends 6 mi (9.7 km) across with a shoreline of about 33 mi (53 km).<\/p>\n
