Since it was formed 7,700 years ago, Crater Lake has been filling with water. It is now the deepest lake in the United States and one of the deepest in the world. Geologists have been investigating its depths for many years. In 1959, they sent a research submarine named Turtle down to the bottom of the lake. They found that the bottom was covered with a thick layer of sediment. In the 1980s, they sent another research submarine, named Phoenix, to the bottom of the lake. This time, they found that the sediment was not as thick as they had thought. The geologists believe that the sediment is being slowly washed away by the water.

There is no recorded depth of Crater Lake, so it is unknown how deep it is.

Have they reached the bottom of Crater Lake?

In 1989, scientists completed 24 trips to the bottom of Crater Lake using a mini-submarine. This was the first time that a submarine had been used to explore the depths of the lake, and the scientists were able to collect valuable data about the geology and ecology of the lake.

A tunnel through dead aquatic moss at the bottom of Crater Lake The dead moss layers accumulate over thousands of years, sometimes reaching 40 yards thick. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States and is renowned for its deep blue color. The lake is fed by rain and snow, and has no outlet. The dead moss at the bottom of the lake is one of the reasons for the lake’s deep blue color.
