Crater Lake is a stunning natural wonder, but it was not always the haven for wildlife that it is today. In the late 1800s, park founder William Steel introduced trout fingerlings to the lake in an effort to improve recreational opportunities. This began a trend of introducing non-native fish to the lake, which continued until 1941. Thankfully, stocking the lake has now ended and Crater Lake can return to its natural state.<\/p>\n

Between 1888 and 1941, the lake was stocked with seven different species of fish. Only two of those species thrive today. It is currently estimated that the lake supports approximately 60,000 kokanee salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka; landlocked sockeye salmon) and rainbow trout.<\/p>\n
